The Saturday morning procession is a highlight not to be missed. Witness a spectacle of costumed performers weaving their way through the streets of Morpeth, bringing history and tradition to life. This beloved tradition, returning after a hiatus, promises to create unforgettable memories for locals and visitors alike.

A Celebration Rooted in Community

One of the most endearing aspects of the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering is its grassroots nature. Entirely run by volunteers since its inception in 1968, the festival fosters a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It provides a platform for both established and emerging artists to showcase their talents, ensuring the traditions of the Northeast continue to evolve and thrive.

From Humble Beginnings to a Cultural Powerhouse

What began as a modest concert in the 60’s has blossomed into a three-day extravaganza with over 60 events. Competitions, performances, and workshops fill the streets with a vibrant energy, each celebrating the unique spirit of Northumberland.

Celebrating Talent and Tradition: A Tapestry of Competitions

The heart of the festival lies in its diverse competitions, showcasing the region’s rich pool of talent. From the mesmerising melodies of the Northumbrian pipes to the lively rhythm of clog dancing, over a hundred categories highlight the areas artistic heritage.

Each year, the Gathering takes on a special theme, delving into fascinating aspects of Northumberland’s history. From the coal mining heritage that shaped the region’s identity to the Lindisfarne Gospels, a treasured illuminated manuscript, these themes add a unique layer to the festival, offering a deeper appreciation for the region’s cultural tapestry.

Honoring Roland Bibby and the Northumbrian Language Society

The festival owes much of its success to the unwavering dedication of Roland Bibby, a champion of Northumberland’s traditions. Through his efforts and the founding of the ‘Northumbriana’ magazine, the Gathering has played a crucial role in promoting the Northumbrian language and culture. This legacy continues to inspire, ensuring these traditions remain vibrant for generations to come.
