Rainy Day family activities Near the Northumberland Coast - Summer 2024
Planning a family getaway to the beautiful Northumberland coast? Sunshine and warm breezes are always welcome, but it’s always good to prepare for the great British weather! At Coast and Country Stays we have a range of inviting holiday homes ideal as a base to explore this fantastic area. Our cosy cottages or large houses are the perfect place to get together with friends and family. Whilst there’s so much to explore outdoors, we’ve also come up with a few indoor activities to make the most of your stay – perfect for any drizzly days and to ensure your holiday remains unforgettable, rain or shine.
1. Historical Exploration at Bamburgh Castle
Just a couple of miles from our properties in Beadnell, Seahouses and overlooking our property in Bamburgh, is the magnificent Bamburgh Castle. Whilst its imposing exterior captures the eye, its interior is a treasure trove of history and intrigue. The castle opens its doors to visitors who can explore the impressive interior rooms including the State Rooms, The King’s Hall, The Armoury, The Keep to name but a few. In addition, there is also an archaeology museum and The Armstrong and Aviation museum.
The castle also offers a fantastic choice of summer activities, ideal to entertain children. From ‘Castle Critters’ in July and August, various crafting sessions throughout the holidays and even a summer circus weekend in August.
To find out more and book your tickets, please visit the Bamburgh Castle website:
2. The Maltings Theatre & Cinema
Located in Berwick-upon-Tweed, The Maltings Theatre & Cinema is a cultural hub, providing entertainment for all weather conditions. From family-friendly films to live broadcast events, theatrical performances, and art exhibitions, there’s always something exciting on show.
For summer and into Autumn 2024, The Granary Gallery has a ‘Lowry and the Sea’ exhibition. The Main House Theatre features a range of films from child friendly films with a ‘U’ certificate to those over 18. There are talks and events with Michael Palin in August, and live broadcast screenings. Visit the Maltings website to book tickets and for more information about what’s on.
3. Morpeth Market town
Morpeth is a lovely market town offering a delightful blend of old and new. Bustling streets lined with stylish shops and upscale bars contrast with charming cobbled lanes and quirky farmers’ markets. Every first Saturday, the town comes alive with the traditional Morpeth Market, where you can find delicious local produce, artisan goods, and a taste of the region’s unique heritage.
4. RNLI Grace Darling Museum
Northumberland boasts many heroes, and one of the most celebrated in this region is Grace Darling. In 1838, during a terrible storm, a young Grace, alongside her lighthouse keeper father, bravely ventured out in their small boat to rescue survivors from the wrecked ship SS Forfarshire. Grace’s courage and this dramatic event cemented her place in history and continues to inspire visitors to this day.
The Grace Darling Museum is located in Bamburgh and offers a glimpse into her life and the events of the rescue. Visitors can discover the story through interactive exhibits, artefacts, and photographs which depict this moment in history.
5. Northumberland Coast Culinary delights
Our final top tip for a rainy day activity is to take the opportunity and sample some of the fantastic culinary delights on offer. There’s so many wonderful cafe’s and inviting restaurants on the doorstep of our properties in Beadnell, Seahouses and Bamburgh. From harbour-side bistros to cosy pubs, you’ll find the perfect spot to unwind.
Sample the legendary Craster kippers, their smoky aroma filling the air, or savour the simple pleasure of perfectly battered fish and chips. Whilst local seafood is often on the menu – including fresh seafood platters, there’s alsways a range of tempting homecooked specials and of course puddings!
