For 2024, the Castle has once again opened it’s doors and invites you to step back in time to an era where heroes defended their homes against formidable foes, and allegiances were as shifting as the sands of the Northumbrian beaches. Running from February to early November 2024, Bamburgh Castle’s event ‘Follow in the Footsteps of Uhtred at Bebbanburg’ is of course, referring to the Netflix blockbuster ‘The Last Kingdom’ which bridges the gap between history and fantasy.
A Tale of Two Uhtreds: History Meets Fiction at Bamburgh Castle
The event promises to enchant fans of history and fiction alike and is ideal for teenagers and adults. Led by the guide Ragnar, the event is described as a “journey of the real Uhtred the Bold, who defended his home of Bebbanburg and managed to climb the ladder of power where his allies were both Vikings and the King of England” .
The event is not just a tour, it’s an experience that compares the gripping narrative of Netflix’s The Last Kingdom with the authentic history of one of Northumbria’s most iconic figures. Discover the true stories that inspired the series, explore the location that helped frame the epic saga, and uncover the reality behind the fiction.
Destiny is All: Become the Monarch of the North
One of the highlights of the tour includes a special segment dedicated to a battle scene filmed right in the area, offering a unique behind-the-scenes look at how Bamburgh’s landscapes came to life on screen. The event culminates in a ceremonial crowning, where attendees can be proclaimed Queen or King of the North, if only for a moment, in the shadow of the ancient walls of Bebbanburg.

The event tour lasts approximately 2 hours which includes roughly half an hour for an overview of The Last Kingdom exhibition and the crowning on the throne! The ticket price for the event also includes full admission tickets to Bamburgh Castle so after the tour you can continue to explore the Castle and grounds. Whilst the tour refers to The Last Kingdom, it covers Anglo-Saxon and Viking history as well as rooms inside the Castle and weather permitting external grounds too, so there is something for everyone even if you haven’t managed to watch the series!
