festive christmas markets
To add a touch of magic to your holiday experience, Northumberland boasts many charming Christmas markets. Wrap up in your warmest coats and scarves and head to nearby Alnwick or Berwick-upon-Tweed, where you’ll find festive stalls offering local crafts, seasonal treats, and unique gifts from a variety of independent local traders. Adorned with sparkling fairy lights, these market towns are magical to visit at Christmas.
For a dose of history and grandeur, venture to the stately homes that dot the Northumberland landscape. During the Christmas season, many of these historic estates open their doors for festive events and decorations. Here are a few of the highlights:
From mid November through to early January, Bamburgh Castle undergoes a breathtaking metamorphosis, evolving into a captivating Christmas Kingdom that promises visitors an unforgettable festive experience. The castle, perched majestically on the Northumberland Coast, becomes a beacon of holiday cheer, with its historic state rooms adorned in twinkling lights, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
Alongside this magical transformation at Bamburgh Castle, there are also an array of delightful activities to engage visitors of all ages. One highlight is the opportunity to meet Father Christmas himself, adding an extra layer of joy and wonder to the holiday experience. In addition, there’s also festive wreath making and carols from local choirs. For an up to date list of dates and events, visit the website via the link below.
In addition to the festivities in the market town of Alnwick, the Alnwick Garden has an award winning Winter Light Trail. Cragside is a National Trust property and whilst the house is closed during this Christmas season, there’s still plenty of outdoor family fun to be had. With an outdoor maze, festive decoration making, mischievous mice, wish tree and of course plenty of winter walks to stretch the legs and breathe some crisp fresh air.
A little further afield but well worth the visit is English Heritage Belsay Hall Castle and Gardens. There’s an annual Christmas Fair on 25th and 26th November 2023 which features traditional handmade crafts and gifts from local artisan makers, set in the beautiful backdrop of Belsay Hall. In December, there are several events including Festive Stories with Father Christmas. For more information visit their website here.
