A Day Out at Bamburgh Castle: The Jewel of Northumberland!
If you’ve ever found yourself ambling through the landscapes of Northumberland, you might’ve spotted a castle that looks straight out of a fairy tale. We’re talking, of course, about the incredible Bamburgh Castle. If you haven’t visited yet, pop on your comfiest shoes and get ready to be wowed, because this place is the stuff of legends – literally!
A Bit of Background
To set the scene, Bamburgh Castle sits majestically on volcanic rock, overlooking the North Sea. It’s seen its fair share of history, going back more than 1,400 years. Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, and many rulers have walked its halls and it is still inhabited today! Bamburgh Castle opens its doors to visitors from all over the globe. In fact in 2023, it was winner of the North East England large visitor attraction of the year.
The Views are Un-REAL!
Whether you’re standing atop the battlements gazing out at the Farne Islands or looking up from the village below, the vistas are nothing short of magical. There’s plenty to wow inside the castle too, with state rooms, an armoury as well as special events and exhibitions throughout the year. For 2023 and 2024, one of the events is ‘The Last Kingdom’ TV props and costume display.
Family Fun Galore
Traveling with little ones? They’re going to love Bamburgh too. There’s so much to explore both inside and outside the castle. There are often hands on activities for them to dive into, such as the current event (2023) of ‘Uhtred’s School of Warriors’ focusing on Ragnor, a young Viking warrior.
After you’ve taken in all the historic wonders, head to the beach! Bamburgh Beach is just a stone’s throw away, and it’s perfect for sandcastle-building, rock pooling and dipping toes in the water. If you’re lucky, you might also spot a pod of dolphins which are known to swim around this coastal area.
A Little Birdie Told Me...
Nature enthusiasts, this one’s for you! The Farne Islands, which you can spot from Bamburgh, are a sanctuary for seabirds. Puffins, terns, and seals. If you’re keen, hop on a boat trip from nearby Seahouses. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise.
Hungry? Thirsty? No Worries!
Exploring can be tiring, but fear not! The surrounding village has plenty delightful eateries. From traditional fish and chips , to English afternoon tea. Or maybe some fresh seafood. And if you’re a fan of local brews, there are cosy pubs waiting to welcome you in.
Wrap Up
So, if Bamburgh Castle wasn’t on your radar before, I hope it’s zoomed to the top of your must-visit list. Steeped in history, surrounded by natural beauty, and just waiting for you and your family to create unforgettable memories – Bamburgh is a gem in Northumberland’s crown.
Pack a picnic, grab your camera, and maybe a kite for the beach. Trust me; it’s going to be a day to remember!
