beadnell's history

Beadnell’s history is anchored in fishing and farming, dating back to Roman times. The village is unique, being the only west-facing harbour on the east coast of England. This location was ideal for herring fishing, the industry on which Beadnell’s prosperity was originally built.

The first known reference to the village, mentioned as “Bedehal” and “Bedehala”, can be found in the Boldon Book of 1183, indicating that Beadnell has been populated for at least 800 years.

The village’s most famous landmark is Beadnell Harbour, built in the 18th century. The harbour’s construction was largely funded by John Wood, a local landowner, to aid the export of limestone, taken from the quarries at nearby Easington. Lime kilns by the harbour, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, were used to make quicklime for farming and building purposes, an industry that thrived alongside fishing.

Overlooking the harbour is Beadnell Hall, a grand 18th-century mansion. It was built by the Forsters, a prominent local family, and serves as a reminder of the wealth that was once associated with Beadnell.

Beadnell’s parish church, St Ebba’s, is named after an early Christian saint who was Abbess of Coldingham in the 7th century. The church is mostly 18th-century but incorporates remnants of an earlier, 13th-century building. Close by is the site of an ancient chapel, which was dedicated to Ebba and was probably the original focus of the settlement.

In the 20th century, Beadnell’s population saw a decline as fishing became less profitable and many people moved to larger cities for employment. However, in the past few decades, Beadnell has seen a resurgence as a popular destination for tourists, with its beautiful sandy beaches, clear waters, and a wide range of water sports, particularly scuba diving and windsurfing.

Visitors today can experience a mixture of the past and the present, with the historic harbour and lime kilns, the ancient church of St Ebba’s, the scenic beaches, and a wealth of outdoor activities. Beadnell offers a rich taste of Northumberland’s past while promising a vibrant and active holiday destination.
