HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE

Friday 1st September

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, written by J.K. Rowling, is the first book and film in the wizarding series.  The story blends adventure, friendship and the battle between good and evil.  In this film, we’re introduced to an orphaned boy, Harry Potter, who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is a wizard. Rescued from his awful Aunt and Uncle, he enters a magical world, attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. At Hogwarts, Harry makes close friends, Ron and Hermione, and discovers that his parents were killed by the dark wizard Voldemort.

The trio uncover a mystery surrounding a magical object called the Philosopher’s Stone, which grants immortality. Throughout the school year, they encounter challenges, including a three-headed dog, a deadly chess match, and a mirror that shows deepest desires.

What better place to watch this film than at an outdoor cinema in the grounds of Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, which was used as the exterior setting for Hogwarts and various scenes of Harry learning to fly were also filmed in the grounds of this spectacular castle.

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

Saturday 2nd September

The second night of outdoor cinema films at Alnwick Castle screens ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’.  This is based on the fifth book in the Harry Potter series created by J.K. Rowling.  The film, released in 2007, follows the fifth year of Harry Potter at the wizarding school of Hogwarts.

The plot focuses on the return of Voldemort who is rebuilding his army of Death Eaters.  In response to this a secret society called the Order of the Phoenix is formed.  The backdrop to the story also includes the obstructive Ministry of Magic who do not want to believe Voldemort will return.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Sunday 3rd September

Over three decades after Top Gun, the much anticipated sequel returns and this is the third and final night of outdoor cinema films at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland.

Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, is reassigned to Top Gun school to train recent graduate pilots for a mission to destroy a uranium plant.  Among the new recruits is Rooster, the son of his late friend Goose. Maverick, burdened by a promise to Rooster’s mother, faces tension with the young pilot.

A huge box office hit, this is a film to watch again and again!
